The Credit Repair Survival Kit
There are all kinds of survival kits offered today. If you live in Florida, you probably have a hurricane survival kit in your home. If you live in the northern states, you should have a winter storm survival kit in your car in case you get stuck. Due to the rising number of people in over their heads in debt, we decided it was time to assemble the supplies you'll need to survive an "attack" on your credit. Here's what we will put in our Credit Repair Survival Kit:
A rubber band...
To wrap around your wrist to help you remember to pay your bills on time. As you may have found out, just a few "late-pays" can have a huge negative impact on your credit rating.
A piece of string...
To help you tie up the loose ends of your finances. Now is the time to get organized, determine exactly what your outstanding debt is, and make a plan for repairing your credit.
A pen...
To sign all the correspondence and dispute letters you'll be sending to your creditors. Experts recommend that you communicate in writing with lenders and debt collection companies. You should also maintain a file of all the notices you receive, and your outgoing correspondence.
Patience...
Because it will take time for your efforts to be reflected in an improved credit score. Experts say you should plan on a period of months to maybe even a year before your rating reflects your improved financial status. Thee are no "instant fixes" but there are proven techniques for restoring your financial integrity.
A sense of humor...
Because you'll need it. Getting angry at your creditors and their debt collection companies can only hurt your credit repair efforts. You need to stay calm and focused when responding to a "credit attack" in order to be effective
A rope...
In case you get to the end of yours. (Just kidding!) No, there's no reason to learn the knot for making a noose. Everyone's credit can be repaired, and in many cases, you can do it yourself, for free.
Here's what you should really have in your Credit Repair Survival Kit:
Copies of your credit report...
You can get a free copy of each of your three credit reports once a year. Your potential lenders check your report before giving you any credit. And it's becoming increasingly common for life and health insurance companies, and even employers to get a copy of your credit report. It's crucial you know what's in your report so you can take action to remove negative items.
Resources...
You need to have the right information in order to successfully fight off the credit attack. The Internet is a good place to start, but don't trust any company that says they can "fix your credit in 24 hours, guaranteed." Credit repair is a serious undertaking, and you'll need serious tools to do it right.
Good credit...
I'm not trying to be funny. You need to establish at least one good source of credit. That will have a positive impact on your credit score. If other lenders are turning away from you, consider a sub-prime merchandise card. This new line of credit will be reported to the major credit bureaus, and your credit report will reflect this good news.
The Credit Repair Survival Kit isn't a real product... yet. In the meantime, you'll have to assemble the resources yourself. But the effort will be worthwhile in the long run.
